Post-session 4 discussion area

Please start a discussion here on how your understanding of talk has developed further from Session 4. Below is a list of your '10 Golden Rules' to make talk more effective in lessons:

1)      Allow more thinking time when expecting responses to questions

2)      Students should feel safe to state their opinions

3)      Recap prior learning more frequently

4)      Create opportunities for everyone to have the chance to speak/ask questions/check understanding

5)      Involve pupils and their ideas in the conclusion of lessons and when reflecting on learning

6)      Ensure that discussions are non-judgemental

7)      Listen carefully

8)      Check that everyone understands the topic/task

9)      Don’t pick on people who don’t want to speak

10)  Let students experiment with different talk techniques

  1. I enjoyed our session today (16th) and think the 10 rules are very effective! However, I think Mr Long should let us talk a bit more! Oh well, it was good.

    1. I agree with that but it does help when Mr Long talks because he tries to explain what we are doing.

  2. This lesson I really enjoyed learning about 'No Pen Wednesday', I think that 'No Pen Wednesday' is a very good idea because it helps implement talk in everyday lessons. I also had a great time using two pieces of paper to indicate that you want to talk. I can't wait for the next session!!!

    1. I completely agree with the whole liking the No Pen Wednesday and I also thought that the 2 pieces of paper was a great idea, but I think we should have been able to choose whether it was a related or unrelated point because if we had used up one blue card but wanted to say something else related then we couldn't.

    2. Yeas, i agree. But, i don't see how the piece of papers are going to help us and other pupils.
It was a FAB session, i hope Miss Nutticombe is okay :)

  3. I really enjoyed the session but i think we could have done more talking rather than mr long cause itwas a little boring but it was good and i really think that no pen wednesday is a good idea because it will let everyone talk more than usual.

  4. I really enjoyed the disscusion. A way to make communicating in a verbal way better in lessons, could be to change the way in which the tables are set out in classrooms - they could be set out like when we had our disscusion previously (in a semicircle) then every pupil can see the other one and can also see who has their hand up to express a certain opinion.

  5. I don't think that Mr Long talked much. Most of the time he was explaining something to us. Also, as i was in class, i saw some Leaders doing the opposite of what we did in the session. I truly enjoy these sessions and wish there where more of them.
